Six and Under New York

December 5th, 2011.
It’s a cold winter day and I’m really in the mood for some Whiskey. It’s my boyfriend’s birthday so luckily for me his favorite Whiskey distillery is only two hours north of NYC.
Tuthilltown Spirits is the first distillery to open in New York since prohibition and is located on a charming farm in Gardiner, NY. Since we love whiskey so much we went on a quick tour of the facility learning everything you could possibly imagine about making whiskey and the licenses needed to run a distillery, followed by a tasting of their unique whiskeys and vodka.
They make even different types of Whiskey, one Rum and two Vodkas all aged to perfection. The coolest part is the batch number is written on each bottle noting that each batch is just a bit different than the other.
PS: Hudson Whiskey was just granted worldwide distribution so keep an eye out for it in your local bar!

September 12th - Bear Mountain/Horsefeathers Tavern, Sleepy Hollow
This past weekend showed the first signs of fall and we couldn’t help but take advantage of the nice weather to go on a mini hike and grab a pint and some stew at a local haunt in Sleepy Hollow. First stop was Bear Mountain. We drove to the top of the mountain and hiked around for a bit to escape the motocycle tailgaters and family crowds. We found this great spot overlooking the valley and laid out in the sun for a bit and took in the scenery.
On the way back to Manhattan, we drove along the Hudson and stopped by one of our favorite taverns in Sleepy Hollow, Horsefeathers. Summer beers have already been replaced by Oktoberfest and Pumpkin flavors! Yum!

September 7th- Red Hook Films, Brooklyn
One of our favorites places to go (and will be blogged a lot about here) is Red Hook, Brooklyn. Located right on the water, away from major transportation Red Hook is the ideal spot to get away from the crowds and enjoy some seafood, a quick drink or a relaxing evening strolling on the pier.
This year we discovered the summer Red Hook Films, a weekly event at the Valentino Pier on the water showing nautical themed movies. For The Life Aquatic we grabbed some grub at The Good Fork and took our blanket and pillows down to the pier to enjoy the movie.

Fort Tilden Beach | Queens, NY | Hours: 6
So this year I discovered a nice little beach with a little bit of history hiding in Queens between Jacob Riis Park and Breezy Point, Fort Tilden. Unfortunately the beach is a bit of a walk from the parking lot, but well worth the walk if you have the energy. Scattered among the park are old Army Installations and concrete bunkers covered in graffiti dating back to the War of 1812. You can actually climb in and walk around if you are daring enough.

August 11th - Overlook Drive In, Poughkeepsie, NY | Honda Element “Emeril”
Pillows, blanket, pop corn and bug spray make the perfect night watching a drive in movie from the Honda Element Zip Car. Both the front AND the back seats fold down making it into one big bed. Here’s my boyfriend mini tailgating with some chicken fingers and fries from the snack shop.

Petite Crevette
Great little find in Carol Gardens, Brooklyn. Pick up car, zip over the BQE as the sun sets over southern Manhattan, grab a bottle of wine at liquor store and enter the small door leading to fresh seafood restaurant Petite Crevette. I have to admit, my boyfriend was the one who found this place a few years ago- BYO, fresh seafood daily, friendly service and charming atmosphere make this one of my favorite restaurants in Brooklyn.
